At Bahori Consulting, we are always eager to embrace initiatives that not only bring us closer to nature but also reinforce our commitment to environmental conservation. Last year, we participated in an event that holds a special place in our hearts: The Big Birding Day (BBD) South Africa 2023.

This annual event is more than just a day dedicated to birdwatching; it’s a nationwide celebration of avian diversity, conservation efforts, and the spirit of community. In this post, we’re thrilled to share our incredible journey, the fascinating places we explored, the wonderful people who joined us, and some remarkable achievements we’ve accumulated over the years.
The Essence of Big Birding Day
BBD is not just an event; it’s a movement. Across South Africa, teams of birdwatching enthusiasts band together for a 24-hour bird-spotting marathon. The goal is straightforward yet ambitious: to identify as many bird species as possible. However, the impact goes far beyond numbers.
BBD plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about the importance of biodiversity, promoting citizen science, and contributing essential data to bird conservation efforts. It’s a day when novices and experts alike immerse themselves in the beauty of South Africa’s birdlife, exploring everything from bustling urban areas to serene natural reserves.
Our Birding Journey: A Tapestry of Terrains
This adventure was as diverse as the avian life we set out to observe. Our expedition took us through a variety of locations, each with its unique ecosystem and bird species. From the urban sprawl of Polokwane metro and the unexpected nature hotspot of Peter Mokhaba Stadium to the tranquil Polokwane Nature Reserve, every stop added to our rich tapestry of experiences.
We navigated through challenges, like dodging golf balls at the Polokwane golf course, and marvelled at nature’s wonders, from the high-rainfall foothills of the Wolkberg to the blossoming grasslands of Haenertsburg Hamlet.
Our journey continued through the escarpment’s breathtaking views, the bustling town of Tzaneen, and the sprawling waters of Ebenezer Dam. We concluded our adventure at Letaba Estates and the picturesque Letaba Junction, each location offering a unique backdrop for birdwatching and a testament to South Africa’s rich biodiversity.

The Team Behind the Binoculars
No adventure is complete without a band of passionate individuals, and our team this year was nothing short of extraordinary. Joined by Martin and Mareza Rudman and Mitch Tonello, I had the privilege of being the ‘bomb squad’ addition for 2023. Together, we brought a mix of expertise, enthusiasm, and a shared love for our feathered friends, making our birding experience both fun and meaningful.

A Legacy of Birding
Reflecting on our 22 years of participation in Big Birding Day, the numbers are a testament to our enduring passion and dedication:
- We’ve observed a total of 444 bird species over the years.
- Seventeen species have graced us with their presence every year.
- Sixty-seven species have been unique sightings, seen only once in all our years of birding.
These statistics are more than just numbers; they symbolise our ongoing commitment to bird conservation and the endless wonders of nature that we strive to protect.
Conclusion
Participating in Big Birding Day South Africa 2023 was not only an opportunity to contribute to a vital cause but also a chance to connect with nature and like-minded individuals. It reminded us of the importance of taking a moment to look up, listen, and appreciate the incredible biodiversity that surrounds us. At Bahori Consulting, we are proud to support and participate in initiatives that align with our values of conservation and community engagement. We look forward to many more years of birding adventures, discoveries, and contributions to the preservation of our planet’s exquisite birdlife.
Here’s to many more flights of discovery, shared experiences, and contributions to the rich tapestry of South Africa’s bird conservation efforts.
