Third-party assessment of waste gas activity.

Bahori Consulting was commissioned as the mining and environmental expert to provide an independent, third-party assessment of the waste gas activity at an industrial facility north of the City of Cape Town in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

The evaluation of the project was based on design identified in the Project Design Document using the defined criteria under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Our mining and environmental expertise was invaluable in the review of the management systems, auditing methods, environmental issues specific to the applicable sectoral scope, as well as the environmental and social impacts and aspects of CDM project activity.

The project entailed a confidential smelting operation that produced a metal slag and product along with CO and H2 furnace off-gas. Historically, the majority of the furnace off-gas was cleaned and then flared. The cleaned gas is now being routed for use in the preheating ore – going into the smelter and cleaning of the gas prior to flaring to reduce the particulate emissions from the flares.

The project now utilises this cleaned furnace off-gas for electricity generation as a substitute for imported electricity from utilities, resulting in a material emission reduction.
